2020.10.28 17:02 Expatb Best Romance Books of the Decade (2010-2019) according to r/RomanceBooks

This is it. This for real, is the Grand Poobah and the culmination of everyone looking up their favorite books, only to find out they were published in 2008 or 2009! Prepare yourself for a long post with many links. And I sincerely apologize for the length. Strap in, it's gonna be long!
First off, thank you to everyone who participated, by either nominating and/or voting in our Best of the Decade Romance books poll. Below you will find the top three (and in some cases the top one) books in every category polled.
Descriptions of books are linked to Goodreads, and not included here as the post became too long. Quoted text is from the person who nominated the book as to why they felt it should be one of the best.
For a quick look at all books nominated you can find the spreadsheet I used to track here.
Best Fantasy Romance - Nomination Thread
1st Place: A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas, 2016; YA, M/F, Open door; nominated by u/failedsoapopera
Why I love this book so much:
*It deals with real mental health issues within an interesting & rich fantasy world
*The chemistry between the main characters is on point
*It has so many favorite tropes: friends to lovers, fated mates, there's only one bed!, training montages, etc.
*Watching Feyre find self worth, power, and purpose, as well as friendship and love is just so healing for me
*It straddles the line between NA and regular fantasy, but I think it deserves a place in the fantasy contest because it was widely loved, made an impact on the romance world when it was released, and while there are some technical issues with SJM's writing IMO, it's a well-crafted, fun, and heartwarming story. Plus, it's got a great cliffhanger.
2nd Place: Radiance by Grace Draven, 2015; M/F, open door; nominated by u/Hrylla
This book fits so many of the things I personally like:
*Friends-to-lovers
*Altar diplomacy (arranged marriage)
*Strong heroine
*"Ugly" hero
*Besides that the pace and story just flows so nicely. Being a sucker for world building I also thoroughly enjoyed myself (that weird dish where she had to kill the pie? Great!).
*It also features such swoon worth quotes as: "Woman of day," he said slowly. "You mean everything to me.”
3rd Place: Uprooted by Naomi Novik, 2015, YA, M/F, Close Door; nominated by u/SphereMyVerse
To be quite honest I’m nominating this one cos it was one of the first fantasy romances I read, and I think it needs to be here! It was a huge hit at the time. It’s the classic immortal hero with deeply ridiculous name meets and is awful to a feisty young woman, who gives as good as she gets despite the weird power dynamic. It‘s a go-to rec for a newbie to fantasy romance.
Also it should have been F/F, Kasia and Agnieszka had way more chemistry, Sarkan was just tolerable some of the time, thank you for listening to my TED talk
Best Debut Novel: Nomination Thread
1st Place: The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, 2018; CR, M/F, Open Door, Own Voices; nominated by u/mnmnenado
An obvious nomination and continuous top rec on the sub. This book gender-flips the Pretty Woman trope and gets points for featuring racial- and neuro-diversity, no-shame sex work, a sweet love story, and super steamy sex.
2nd Place: Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore, 2019; HR, M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/Yellowtail799
Annabelle Archer, the brilliant destitute daughter of a country vicar, meets Sebastian Devereux, the cold and calculating Duke of Montgomery. She has earned a place at Oxford, rare as she is one of the first female students, and it is dependent upon her support of women's suffrage. He is looking for a wife, not an outspoken commoner who may upset his political position. Love ensues.
Quality Points: historically rich; the problem that separates them from being together is actually dealt with (not waved away) in a way that makes sense.
3rd Place: The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, 2016; CR, M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/expatb
This book took contemporary romance by storm and skyrocketed Sally Thorne to stardom. She created a great enemies to lovers story with a secretly pining hero that was hard to resist for many a reader. Including me! I loved Lucy and Josh and the sweetness that developed between them.
This book was so popular and well liked that many (including me) had such high expectations for her second novel that there was no way she could live up to it and the book fell flat. To this day, The Hating Game is one of the most recommended CR, enemies to lovers book out there.
Best Historical - Medieval - Nomination Thread
1st Place: Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks, 2012; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/seantheaussie
No reason given.
2nd Place: Agnes Moor's Wild Knight by Alyssa Cole, 2014; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/expatb
I think that there is a real talent to tell a story in a shorter format, and Alyssa Cole is mastering that with her novellas. Her ability to have a set-up, build a relationship, have a nice level of steam and have me buy in to it all in 50 pages, is something to be lauded.
I loved this novella about Agnes, who is a black courtier in James IV court. I felt that there was a real connection between Agnes and the Wild Knight, which is a switch for me, as someone who doesn't like short timelines, or insta-love. But it really worked for me. I loved that her Highlander had come for her - it was HOT.
I also really enjoyed the uniqueness of having a black character in that setting. In reality, they existed, but we don't see them too often in books and the fact that she is present and has a mind and is basically a diplomat for James made me really like Agnes and this story.
3rd Place: Far, Bright, and Terrible by Elizabeth Kingston, 2017; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/SaMnReader
I could have nominated any of this series. Kingston takes difficult characters and has believable growth through the book. This one was very emotional, taking a character that was loathed and felt irredeemable in the prior book and giving her a love story to end all love stories. The hero is a teddy bear, the heroine is a manipulative, powerful force made so by her excellent backstory. The story reckons with the girl she was and the woman she became-and the hero loving her for it all.
And Nick Boulton reads the audio.
Best LGBTQI Books - Thread
1st Place: Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, 2019; CR, M/M, Open Door; nominated by u/arsenal_kate
It’s just so incredibly charming and sweet. It’s perfect escapism, both on the relationship level and on the political level.
2nd Place: Glitterland by Alexis Hall, 2013; CR, M/M; nominated by u/eros_bittersweet
A highly-educated writer with bipolar disorder is smitten at first sight with a skinny-jeans-wearing, glitterly-epauletted Essex lad. They have a flirtation in which Ash, the writer, castigates himself for the attraction he feels towards Darian, who he initially thinks is as brainless as he is unapologetically tacky: "Hunjad Pacent!" But all is not what it seems. During their initial hookup Darian is thoughtful and caring, beyond what one would expect of a one-night-stand, and he expresses interest in dating Ash. As their relationship progresses, he demonstrates that he is the better person of the two and that he is good for Ash in every way: he brings him down to earth, he forces him to think of others. His every action, from cooking him dinner to bringing him timely wet-wipes, is thoughtful and demonstrative of his care. But Ash's obstacles to love are many, and all of them are within himself. He must overcome his own prejudices against Darian's background, and his personal demons, which tell him he does not deserve love, to be the partner Darian deserves.
A very modern story about pride and prejudice, this book is, in my opinion, just in another class of storytelling. Not only is Ash's prejudice against Darian a theme, but so is our own prejudice as the reader, in (most likely) assuming Ash is the more worthy man of the two. In Ash's metaphorically laden internal monologues, which are wildly creative, his imagery quite often becomes overwrought and disproportionate to the events and things described. Doubt creeps in gradually: is Ash, so very intelligent and privileged, not sometimes just as absurd as Darian can be, if not more so? Isn't Darian, Essex Salt-of-the-Earth, actually a lovely person; his goodness, emotional intelligence and instinctive sense of rightness just as worthy of our esteem as Ash's cleverness? Alexis Hall's intensely immersive first-person narrative tells a love story that also makes us question our own prejudices. And as the book unfolds, we judge each of the heroes less for their ways of expressing themselves. By the end of the book, I found I was unable to be amused at Ash's hyperbole when I understood how much pain lurked behind it, and understood that Darian's absurdities mattered far less than his good heart.
Ash's burdensome inner life is a heartbreaking picture of bipolar disorder. This is a book that does not use mental illness to force drama upon the plot: one of the most affective moments of the book is when Ash builds a simple trip to the grocery store into a psychological crisis. His actions, though they stem from his illness, are often selfish, yet we see how much it hurts him to carry them out, how much he loathes himself for things done out of a sense of self-preservation. Importantly, he does not need to become perfect or healed to win Darian's love: he must merely accept himself as deserving of it.
It's a wonderful, thematically rich book with a beautiful love story as its heart.
3rd Place: The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, 2011; HR, M/M, Closed Door; nominated by u/expatb
This book is beautifully written. Miller's prose and the fact that she is a high school classics teacher as her main job helps with the intimate knowledge she has of the Iliad and the time period, which shines through in her storytelling. She fills in the blanks left by Homer in his epic poem and creates such a believable love story between Patroclus and Achilles. This book was great.
Best Contemporary Novel - Nomination Thread
1st Place: The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, 2018; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/theheartofanartichok
I think this book deserves to win because it was unique and very sexy. I loved the hero and the way this book treated both autism and sex work. I can’t think of another book that made me sigh and swoon the way TKQ did.
2nd Place: Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert, 2019; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/expatb
This was the first book I had ever read by Hibbert and what an introduction! This book blew me away with the humor, the steam, and the representation of people with illnesses that aren’t immediately apparent. They way that she handles both characters and their issues so deftly and weaves them into the story is amazing and set the bar (high) for me. Red became instant book boyfriend material. And Chloe was someone I really wanted to get to know and hang out with.
I enjoyed it so much, that immediately after I read it, I sent it to a few of my friends for them to read.
3rd Place: Pretty Face by Lucy Parker, 2017; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/1RexManningFan
*Both characters are genuinely likable
*Slow burn romance. You know it's inevitable, the characters know it's inevitable, but they try to resist
*Obstacles to HEA are not contrived. Feels realistic and again, characters are aware of their issues but work around them
*Unique setting - London theatre world
Best Paranormal Romance - Nomination Thread
1st Place: Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews, 2013; M/F; nominated by u/expatb
This was the first book that I read by Andrews and it was fantastic. I loved the slow burn and the alternate universe that they created. A house that is magical and tied to the witch who keeps it? Yes, please. While I don’t tend to favor vampires and werewolves, I really enjoyed the ones in this book! If that doesn’t make it the greatest, nothing will.
2nd Place: Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews, 2011; M/F; nominated by u/Scavengerhawk
This book/series is one of a kind. A kickass heroine who LOVES her family and respects herself. The Hero is intimidating and powerful but respects her, listens to her, relies on her knowledge/power when they pair up. It's a slow burn with a lot of character development. You fall in love with her quirky grandmother and her war-veteran mother. She always strives to do the right thing and is true to herself.
Amazing plot, amazing story, and the perfect slow-burn with just enough banteflirting.
3rd Place: Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost, 2012; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/Needednewusername
I believe this book should win because both characters have powers that make the other more vulnerable than they had ever been in the past, and that vulnerability leads to a truly beautiful love story!
Best Historical - Georgian/Regency - Nomination Thread
1st Place: A Week to be Wicked by Tessa Dare, 2012; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/seantheaussie
Tessa Dare's A Week to Be Wicked is fucking awesome. I spent my time reading it feeling warm inside, with a smile on my face and often squirmed and hummed with happiness. It peaks at the second greatest romantic moment I have yet read.
2nd Place: Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt, 2016; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/mirukushake
*The hero of this book is a uniquely mercurial, vain, and cunning villain, without being an asshole
*One of the darkest hero backstories this side of the 2000s
*Heroine has been given a raw deal in life but still takes pride in what she does, and can find the good in others, including the bad boy hero
*Hot bathtub-related sex
3rd Place: When Beauty Tamed the Beast by Eloisa James, 2011; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/mirukushake
*House M.D., but make it Georgian and add some beauty and the beast vibes
*The characters act in very ridiculous and anachronistic ways, but their banter is so hilariously snarky it works anyway
*The MCs actually spend time together and get to know each other in real ways, and the ending of the book beautifully shows just how deep their feelings are
Best Young Adult/New Adult Romance - Nomination Thread
1st Place: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas, 2015; FR, M/F, open door; nominated by u/expatb
I feel like Maas almost singlehandedly created the “New Adult” genre. She certainly did for me. This book creates such a beautiful - and hot! - story that gaps that younger reader to adult reader so seamlessly. Plus, it’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling, which is one of my absolute favorites. I thought Feyre was such an interesting heroine and I enjoyed reading about her journey and her ability to take on some very tough situations.
With how much I enjoyed this one, maybe I’ll finally read the follow up books someday!
2nd Place: The Deal by Elle Kennedy, 2015; CR, M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/urchicken
This book is such a great introductory book into the New Adult genre. I love the banter between the two MCs. I love that they established a friendship before jumping into bed together. This book was light hearted and fun with just a touch of angst. Also the hero is a hot hockey player, who doesn’t love that?
3rd Place: Autoboyography by Christina Lauren, 2017; CR, M/M; nominated by u/booksandwine99
This is a YA m/m romance. It's senior year of high school, and Tanner is a bisexual non-mormon living in Provo, Utah (an area with 98% mormon population). He can't wait to get out of there, and has no plans on meeting anyone in Utah. Then BYU college student Sebastian TA's in his creative writing class and sparks fly. The problem is, Sebastian is a poster boy for devout mormonism and is leaving on a two year mission for the church in a few short months.
I may have loved this more because I am an ex-mormon, but I still reccomend it even if you don't have any knowledge of mormon culture. Christina or Lauren either have history with the church or they did their research because it is spot on. I liked the characters and it had just the right amount of conflict and angst.
Best Historical - Western/Americana - No Thread (only one nomination)
Tempest by Miss Beverly Jenkins, 2018; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/grumpyblonde
This book was my first foray into Beverly Jenkins and I loved it! This book has an independent, adventurous heroine (who is a crack shot btw) and a closed-off grumpy hero who mourning the death of his wife and trying to raise their daughter. The characters build a friendship, learn to communicate and bring out the best in each other. Regan, the heroine, updates the hero's outdated views about women. The book delves into the challenges of being black in the US in the 1800s and complex family dynamics. Their daughter is so precious and the main characters have some great chemistry!
Best Science Fiction - Nomination Thread
1st Place: The Last Hour of Gann by R Lee Smith, 2013; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/jaynarg
I've been waiting for what feels like forever for this thread! This book is seriously worthy of awards. It's amazing. Coming close to 1000 pages, it has everything. Humans crash landing on an alien planet. Aliens (of course). The writing is wonderful. The world building...wow. The story is just amazing. After I read this the first time it stuck in my head for months. I'm actually rereading it right now. If you read this book, proceed with caution. TW: this book contains a lot of rape
2nd Place: Starflight by Melissa Landers, 2016; M/F, YA; nominated by u/everymovieapicture
In the words of Stefon, this book has everything. A found family space crew! Space class differences between a space aristocrat hero and a scrappy, badass underdog heroine! That heroine using the hero's temporary amnesia to force him to act as her servant and position her as the aristocrat instead! Naked cuddling for warmth! And so, so much more.
Truly, this book scratches every Sci-Fi romance itch for me. Beautiful yet approachable worldbuilding, fantastic characters, a great supporting cast, and of course, a heart-throbbing romance that's good until "And they lived happily ever after."
3rd Place: This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohter and Max Gladstone, 2019; F/F; nominated by u/MedievalGirl
This novella won all the science fiction awards in the last year. It is also a great romance with exquisite prose. Red and Blue are agents for rivals in the Time Wars. Their taunting messages to each other in tree rings and tea (among other odd things) turn to love letters.
Best Historical - Victorian/Edwardian/Golden Age books - Nomination Thread
1st Place: The Duchess War by Courtney Milan, 2012; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/SaMnReader
A book that for me, comes down to moments. There isn't one particular thing in this book that I can point to and say "that," but the way the arc is constructed, the lack of sacrifice on the part of the heroine, and a hero who ultimately just loves her as she is for who she is. The fact that Robert has some of the best lines does not hurt, including "Look up," Minnie is introverted, and assertive, and is certainly no "mouse". I love a heroine who believe she deserves more than the plan and course her life is taking and despite it being hard, she decides to change it. Robert is a hero and a character who is ideal but not without flaws, he's someone to aspire to.
I've read this book 4-5 times. I think, "Oh,I 'll just read a chapter" and find myself sucked in by the charm, the humor, and the earnestness of it. It's sparkles, it shines, and the moment they meet is one of the best meet cutes in my opinion.
This book does exist in a world that is being set and built and is heavily enriched by the series and the prequel, but it delighted me when I first read it, and it delights me more now.
2nd Place: Ravishing the Heiressby Sherry Thomas, 2012; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/SaMnReader
A most unusual and heartbreaking romance, never easy. It would be easy to reduce this to a romance about a guy who cheats on his wife and woman who stupidly waits for his husband to love her and see her.
Only see, that's not what this is. That's barely a part of the plot even though this discussion dominates low ratings. I submit, instead, this is a book of a man and a woman not given a choice in their partners and learning how to live with it. This is unrequited love and friends to lovers. This is about who you grow to be and reconciling your past with your present.
Millie is one of the most understated tough and amazing heroines. She could launch a thousand essays for the question of what strength is. She's their foundation. I'll hear nothing else.
Here is part of my review:
I won't recap, but I'll definitely say in many ways this isn't an easy read. And it would be easy to malign Fitz for his choices and seemingly constant rejection of Millie, but part of why this book worked was that he, too, was rejected time and again by her. I'm not sure why he'd think anything but what he thought, and his appreciation of her really did ring true from the very early 'bricks' of their relationship. He maintains respect, honesty, and friendship for his wife in a lovely way.
And friendship is such a lovely foundation, isn't it? I think the choices in this book were brave and made for a unique plot. It would be easy to have Fitz hung up on his long forgotten lover but Thomas made her available to him, and in the end that's what set this book apart.
So a couple random paragraphs there, but in the end I'll just say this: I loved their quiet humor, I loved their quiet strength, and I loved their quiet and powerful love.
3rd Place: Love in the Afternoon by Lisa Kleypas, 2010; M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/expatb
This is one of my favorite books by her. And I think I've re-read it as many times as I have read my other favorites by Kleypas, which is saying something since the others were published 15 years prior. I absolutely adored the epistolary, Cyrano feel to the beginning of the book. It set up everything so beautifully.
I think this is one of the first historical romances that I read that dealt with PTSD after a war. I thought it was handled really well. It wasn't cured by a magical vagina, nor some crackpot remedy. It was work and patience.
I Love Beatrix and Christopher, they are so great together. Everything about this book hits the spot for me. It's so good!
Best Erotic Romance - Nomination Thread
1st Place: Priest by Sierra Simone, 2015; CR, M/F; nominated by u/canquilt
This book is elegant, deep, and sexy. Simone gives the main character a crisis of conscience and forces him to choose between personal happiness and his religious community. She weaves theological aspects with sexual ones and does it very artfully. The sex scenes themselves are absolutely out of this world.
2nd Place: Desperate Measures by Katee Robert, 2019; M/F, CR; nominated by u/expatb
Wow, this book packs a punch! This was the first book I've read by Katee Robert and it knocked me upside the head and then pushed me around. I honestly went into this book thinking I wasn't going to like it because I didn't want my childhood to be destroyed. Who knew I wanted Jasmine and Jafar together? Who knew that a sex club run by Hades would be fascinating? (Seriously, though, he's really the only one who could run this club!). And Whoooo-boy was this book hot! It has since spawned six books in the same universe.
Robert knows how to keep the focus so close, in that there's not a lot of external factors, or movement. So much of the plot takes place in an apartment, but it doesn't feel claustrophobic for a minute. That takes talent. And Katee Robert has it.
3rd Place (tie): For Real by Alexis Hall, 2018; CR, M/M; nominated by u/jrooknroll
This book is both sexy and sweet. The writing is incredible. I think this is Hall’s best work.
Added thoughts by u/eros_bitersweet
The erotica is absolutely central to the relationship and drives its progression. Firstly, the expected personas of the dom and sub are completely swapped: Laurie is the half of the partnership powerful IRL with his job in medicine, while Toby is the young, relatively innocent side of the couple who is finding his path in life. In one scene of the novel, Toby really does need Laurie to take charge of a chaotic situation at work, so he can get through it without quitting. And yet Toby is perfectly capable of rubbing shoulders with the educated crowd at Oxford and feeling comfortable, more able to charm them and impress them than Laurie with his knowledge and talent. Who you are in the outside world does not dictate how you experience desire and intimacy.
It's also not just that the kink illustrates what the characters want: the BDSM in this book is also about how they exchange vulnerability. This novel is really about the experience of vicarious desire. Individual longing for the other is layered on top of anticipation of the other's desire, then satisfaction at seeing that desire experienced, a dynamic which zings back and forth between the pair, giving and taking and giving, until it culminates in an overabundance of both feeling and erotic experience.
comment continues here (shortened for overall post length)
3rd Place (tie): The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, 2018; CR, M/F; nominated by u/seantheaussie
THE most popular romance book of the past few years who's appeal is based upon its heat. You know full well that even though you are not on the spectrum like Stella, you wish Michael was servicing you.
Historical - General - Only one nomination, no thread.
The Haunting of Maddy Clare by Simone St. James, 2012; M/F, open door; nominated by u/DancingMarshmallow
I’m nominating this because, while including some paranormal/ghost story elements, it has such lovely attention to detail and its setting of 1920s England: the clothes, the cars, the technology, WWI, the changing culture (especially women entering the work force in more ways). I also love that it uses the setting in a non-stereotypical way. Yes, this is the Roaring 20s, but no gangsters or flappers to be had here. And the setting matters, which I think is important in HR. The basic plot could happen in another time, but the setting isn’t just window dressing here: it influences how our characters act and think. chef’s kiss
Best Romantic Suspense - Nomination Thread
1st Place: Tinderbox by Rachel Grant, 2017; CR, M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/expatb
This was the first book that I read by Grant, based on a recommendation from this sub and it did not disappoint! I absolutely love reading about capable heroes and heroines. I also love when an author shows their intelligence on a topic and I fell that Grant’s experience as an archaeologist in the horn of Africa is apparent in this book. Talk about competence porn!
The fact that this book (and series) is set in an area that is not commonly seen in romance novels, and on that I admittedly know little about, made it so much better for me. I love having unique “experiences” through my reading when in reality I would most likely not be able to go to a place, etc.
The romance of this book is great! It’s hot and it front and center and quick and snappy. Just what I want when I want a plot with lots of action and some shenanigans.
2nd Place: The Search by Nora Roberts , 2010; CR, M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/expatb
This is probably one of the last books I’ve read by Roberts. I have since moved on from bingeing all of her books right as they hit the shelves. But she has to be acknowledged as an author who knows her craft. Admittedly, it’s been a long while since I’ve read this book, but I do have very distinct images and impressions in my head of when I read it. And I feel that that alone is a testament to Robert’s ability to create a story that sticks with you. The atmosphere that she created in this book is what sticks with me the most. In a suspense novel, I personally think that the atmosphere should be a leading character, and this book delivers. I also like to read about a character in distress and the love interest who doesn’t want anyone, but can’t help but make moves to protect the other. Swoon
3rd Place: Firestorm (Flashpoint #3) by Rachel Grant, 2018; CR, M/F, Open Door; nominated by u/seantheaussie
Contains a member of my Pantheon of Heroines and she, and her Hero, Get. Shit. Done. whether standing shoulder to shoulder, back to back or penis in vagina (to be honest only one thing gets accomplished in that last position, but it is VERY accomplished.)

Whew! If you've actually read through this whole thing, thank you! And I hope you enjoyed the past 10 weeks or so of discussions. Thanks again to all!

2020.10.28 15:54 AskACopywriter Halitosis and Listerine – How One Word Led To 8 Figures In Sales

Reading Time: 9 Minutes -- Original Article Here
Sup Reddit?
The story of Listerine begins with… a surgeon?
Joseph Lister was a British surgeon and is considered the “father of modern surgery”.
As a professor of surgery at the University of Glasgow, Lister read a paper from a French chemist you might have heard of.
Louis Pasteur.
This paper showed food would spoil even without being in open air. And that only three things could kill micro-organisms.
  1. Filtration
  2. Heat
  3. Certain chemicals
You can’t filter or cook a surgery patient (without them staying alive at least). So Lister went for chemicals as a way to kill germs.
And the idea of antiseptics was born in 1865.
Lister’s work reduced infections after surgery, making it A LOT safer. Before this, even if surgery went well, you would probably have an infection and die anyway.
Hence, “father of modern surgery”.
But there is also one more thing he is indirectly responsible for.
Mouthwash.

Lister In America

In 1876, Lister gave a lecture at the Philadelphia Exposition.
He was teaching American surgeons about the benefits of antiseptic surgery.
In that audience, there was another Joseph.
Joseph Lawrence.
Lister’s recommendation was using carbolic acid to disinfect and kill germs. The problem was carbolic acid was very irritating.
Lawrence wanted to make something less irritating. So his original formula, finished in 1879, had the following ingredients:
  • Menthol (mint) at 0.042%
  • Thymol (thyme) at 0.064%
  • Methyl Salicylate (wintergreen) at 0.06%
  • Eucalyptol (eucalyptus) at 0.092%
  • Ethanol at 26.9%
Don’t know what the other 70% or so is made of. Probably water.
(Don't ask me. I failed chemistry.)
In honor of the man who inspired this idea, Lawrence called this product Listerine.
He marketed it to disinfect cuts, cure dandruff and athlete’s foot, and give relief for insect bites. But business didn’t go so well.
In 1881, two years after inventing Listerine, Lawrence licensed his formula. He licensed it to a man at a drug store where he bought his ingredients.
The owner of this drug store was Jordan Wheat Lambert, founder of the Lambert Pharmacal Company.

The Lambert Pharmacal Company

Jordan Wheat Lambert had four sons.
Of the four, we know about two. Marion and Gerard Lambert.
Marion was the responsible one who took care of the family business.
Gerard was the overly ambitious one who wanted to make a name for himself.
Gerard wanted to go out and get rich on his own. He somehow blew through his $300,000 ($7.7MM today) inheritance.
And went even further, getting $700,000 ($18MM today) in debt.
Imagine having that much debt.
In 1919 or 1920, Gerard came back to the family business. And he was desperate to increase profits.
He cut a few manufacturing costs, saved some money on taxes and pushed to start advertising Listerine.
Gerard hired a pair of copywriters. Milton Feasley and Gordon Seagrove.
Together with Marion, all four sat down and started brainstorming advertising ideas.
Marion repeatedly suggested Listerine be marketed as a cure for bad breath. Gerard wasn’t happy about that.
Like in the story of why we wear deodorant, it was VERY impolite to talk about bodily functions or smells in the 1920s.
It seems Marion was ready for this, so he brought in the company chemist as backup.
According Gerard:
I asked him if Listerine was good for bad breath.
He excused himself for a moment and came back with a big book of newspaper clippings.
He sat in a chair and I stood looking over his shoulder. He thumbed through the immense book.
“Here it is, Gerard. It says in this clipping from the British Lancet that in cases of halitosis . . .”
I interrupted, “What is halitosis?”
“Oh,” he said, “that is the medical term for bad breath.”
[The chemist] never knew what had hit him. I bustled the poor old fellow out of the room. “There,” I said,” is something to hang our hat on.”
The story is a little different from how Gordon retells it, but the basic point remains.
Halitosis was the big opportunity.
This led to a series of ads that, like the deodorant story, typically targeted women. But instead of body odor being an attack on femininity, halitosis was an attack on a woman’s dating prospects.
These ads began in 1924. And according to tax records, here are the sales revenues of each year:
  • 1923 = $233,552 ($3.3MM today)
  • 1924 = $313,672 ($4.4MM today)
  • 1925 = $640,100 ($8.8MM today)
  • 1926 = $1,898,996 ($26MM today)
But strangely enough, it looks like Gerard abandoned this winning idea. He promoted Listerine for sore throats, colds and other uses. He started Listerine toothpaste which soon failed.
Sales figures kept climbing up and peaked at $4MM ($58MM today), but that was because Gerard spent very aggressively on advertising.
He only returned to making the halitosis appeal in 1928 when sales slowed down. Then The Great Depression hit in 1930 and not even halitosis could bump sales again.
Onto the ads…

The First Bridesmaid – Eleanor (1924)

Eleanor Ad

The first ad in this campaign featured Eleanor.
But I won’t be analysing this 1924 ad.
It is very similar to the 1925 version. The 1925 version with Edna performed a lot better. And I only believe in studying the best performers in any campaign.
Still, I’ve added it here for you to see the differences between the two.

The More Famous Bridesmaid – Edna (1925)

Edna Ad

The Image & Layout

Size grabs attention. And this ad takes this idea to its extreme by a full-page image.
Remember that Listerine was heavily aiming at women with its halitosis appeal.
So here we have a full-page image of a woman looking sad. Guaranteed to catch readers out of concern and wanting to know why.
The copy was printed across in an unusual style to make things visually interesting.

The Headline

Yes, this ad campaign is where the phrase comes from.
It’s not the first time ever this was said. Milton and Gordon, the copywriters, probably got it from a 1917 song of the same name.
But this is where this phrase came into everyday use.
And I don’t think there’s better proof of its power than the fact we still use some variation of this phrase 100 years later.
This headline is a very elegant way of describing why the woman in the image is so sad.
It captures the fear of being alone. It hints she’s not married because there is something wrong with her.
What is wrong?
You’ll need to read the ad to find out.

The Opening Paragraphs

EDNA’s case was really a pathetic one. Like every woman, her primary ambition was to marry. Most of the girls of her set were married—or about to be. Yet not one possessed more grace or charm or loveliness than she.
And as her birthdays crept gradually toward that tragic thirty-mark, marriage seemed farther from her life than ever.
She was often a bridesmaid but never a bride.
These paragraphs are just continuing the thought and premise in the image and headline.
But notice they don’t say anything about why Edna was in this situation.

The Fourth Paragraph

That’s the insidious thing about halitosis (unpleasant breath). You, yourself, rarely know when you have it. And even your closest friends won’t tell you.
“She’s single because of bad breath? Well, good thing I don’t have bad breath.”
You don’t know that.
“Nobody has said anything.”
Not even your closest friends will tell you.
“Wait, what?”
And the seed of doubt is planted.

The Fifth Paragraph

Sometimes, of course, halitosis comes from some deep-seated organic disorder that requires professional advice. But usually—and fortunately—halitosis is only a local condition that yields to the regular use of Listerine as a mouth wash and gargle. It is an interesting thing that this well-known antiseptic that has been in use for years for surgical dressings, possesses these unusual properties as a breath deodorant.
Here it points out the two causes of halitosis.
And quickly dives into Listerine being the solution.
It highlights that Listerine is well-known and has a history of medical use.
But the writer knows that’s a bit irrelevant. So he frames it as an “interesting thing” that it also has “unusual properties” as a breath deodorant.

The Sixth Paragraph (Mechanism)

It halts food fermentation in the mouth and leaves the breath sweet, fresh and clean. Not by substituting some other odor but by really removing the old one. The Listerine odor itself quickly disappears. So the systematic use of Listerine puts you on the safe and polite side.
Here the copy explains the mechanism of Listerine. It describes exactly how it freshens breath.
And it gives the (more powerful) social benefit of using it.

The Call To Action

Your druggist will supply you with Listerine. He sells a lot of it. It has dozens of different uses as a safe antispetic and has been trusted as such for half a century. Read the interesting little booklet that comes with every bottle.
—Lambert Pharmacal Company, Saint Louis, U. S. A.
A very unusual call-to-action.
It is a very soft sell. It doesn’t tell you to go buy it, just that your druggist will have it for you to get it.
It uses social proof by saying your druggist sells a lot of it.
It builds credibility by pointing out the safety in its many uses and long history.
I couldn’t find any information on the booklet, so I can’t say what that’s about.

Key Takeaways

In your business…

  • Licensing is a viable business strategy. Many entrepreneurs want to create a product from scratch. Sometimes, you’d be smarter to license and market someone else’s product to start. Then maybe create one later. Look at Netflix.
  • Don’t try to be everything to everybody. Listerine has many uses as an antiseptic. The most successful one is mouthwash, but Gerard kept trying to push it for many other uses. What he should have done is keep Listerine as a mouthwash and created other brands for its other uses.

In your copy…

  • Know your product intimately. It is no exaggeration to say the house of Listerine mouthwash was built on halitosis. A single word in a book hidden on the shelf of a company chemist. This is why it is incredibly valuable to do in-depth research and to speak to experts related to the product.
  • Explain the mechanism, the how of the problem and the solution. In this ad, we learn how the problem of halitosis happens (fermentation of food particles in the mouth). We also learn how Listerine solves it (stops fermentation and removes, not replaces, the odor). This makes your copy a lot more convincing to the prospect.
  • Tap into an emotion. This ad isn’t about fixing bad breath. It’s about the fear of being unmarried and alone. It’s the fear of missing out. It's about Edna and Eleanor showing those fears. And it’s connecting those two fears to bad breath. Then by solving bad breath, it is implying Listerine will solve those too.

2020.10.28 15:25 AskACopywriter #011: Halitosis and Listerine – How One Word Led To 8 Figures In Sales

2020.10.27 23:01 u_madi_bro Finding the Andersons

My most stubborn brick walls are my great-great-grandparents, Charles and Helene Anderson. I've known their names from the minute my grandparents knew I was interested in finding them. For a long time, I was fine knowing next to nothing about them, but then again I was coursing down my grandfather's paternal line, so what did it matter if the Anderson's waited? Not good enough now, so I'm asking for help, especially because their descendants are relatively few and far between, and I might be the only one trying to find them anymore.
So, here's what I know:
Charles Adolf Ingaman Anderson m. Helen Walstad, and had at least one daughter - Harriet, my great grandmother. Helen was said to be an orphan, and to have a brother that stayed in Norway with the aim of being an artist. She (and her unknown brother) was said to have lived with a priest's family back in Norway, and upon the death of the head of the household, they were both given money in the will. That is all the information my grandparents had, but it got me started.
Minnesota Marriage records have Chas A Anderson marrying Helene T Walstad 10 Jul 1893 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The original doc has two witnesses, Albert Wold and Alice Christianson, but as far as I can tell, they're not relatives, so provide no hints.
Church records from Trinity Lutheran in Minneapolis have Chas A J Anderson & M. Helene baptizing 3 children, all on 3 Dec 1899: Clarence Herbert (born 2 Aug 1894), Arthur William (born 22 Aug 1896), and Harriet (born 5 Aug 1899). The sponsors are listed as Georg Wagner, Bertha Wagner, and Alice Olson. The next row in the record has Georg and Bertha's child's baptism record, in which Charles and Helene are listed as sponsors, but again, none of these sponsors screams family.
The Minnesota 1895 Census has more leads but they're so vague it hurts. There are extra Andersons at the same address, but they are just as likely to be total strangers & neighbors/boarders as they are to be family, given the age gap and the fact that they were born in Minnesota before Charles was living in Minnesota. They lived at 1221 9th Street South. Charles AJ, Helen, and Clarence, all of the right ages. Charles is listed as a resident for only 6 years, 6 months, so I'm not sure if that's an immigration date, or he was somewhere else in the country for a while.
US Census of 1900 has the other kids and a little more info, including the fact that they live near the Deaconess' Institute in Minneapolis. Charles is listed as arriving in 1880 and being naturalized, but I haven't found that record yet. Helen is listed as arriving in 1890, but it's not marked whether she was also naturalized.
The Minnesota 1905 Census has the family as a whole, but the people in their building have varying last names, so again, likely just neighbors. They were living at 1312 Twenty Fourth Street by this time, but there's not much information. Charles is listed as being in Minnesota for 20 years, but again, it's unclear. Helen is listed with 18 years.
Then, tragedy. Charles' obituary shows up in the 17 Jan 1907 edition of the Star Tribune and reads: "Charles A Anderson died yesterday at the Norwegian Deaconess’ hospital. He was 44 years old, and leaves a widow and three children. Funeral services at 2pm Saturday from the residence, 1314 East Twenty-fourth street. Interment at Layman’s."
Searching the records for Layman's Cemetery has been no help, I can't find him under Chas, Charles, or any of his supposed names, but I did find his death record with the Minnesota Historical Society, and have ordered it, but nothing back from them yet. (Edit to add) I did think to see if the Deaconess’ Institute kept records on their patients, but so far I haven’t found any. Minnesota Historical Society has records in their library, but they seem to be more about the nuns and the institute than the patients. Might be an avenue to try in the future but not urgent right now.
Helen and the kids show up on the 1910 Census at the same address as before. Helen is listed as widowed and working as a laundress, the kids are all in school, nothing useful to go backward in time, but it's helping me flush out the kids' trees & lives.
Again, Helen's on the 1920 Census, this time with only Clarence and Arthur. She's still a laundress for a private family, Clarence isn't working, and Arthur is driving for Express Co. By that time, Harriet had married my great-grandpa, so that makes sense.
The well ran dry for Helen on Ancestry, so I started looking at the kids, thinking maybe I could get somewhere. Found Clarence's draft card pretty quick, but nothing about his family there. Found more about Arthur, who may have been wounded in WWI, but haven't verified. He did marry, a woman named Alice, and had a son, Arthur R., then passed in 1962. I'll be doing more research there, but haven't done too much, because I'm still going up the tree, not down.
Moved over to Family Search. Found more detail on Arthur's service in WWI in a Family Search Index. Here's where it got interesting. Father's birthplace: Christiania (Olso), Norway. Mother's birthplace: Stavanger, Norway. Checked Clarence's service record to see if he would verify it, but he only listed them as being born in Norway. Clearly, Arthur was the detail-oriented brother.
But! I have hometowns... maybe. If Arthur was right.
So, I start looking through the wiki's for Norweigan Genealogy, and I swear I've looked everywhere for Helen and Charles, but I'm getting no bites. I even succumbed to looking at Ancestry family trees... and I may have discovered that Walstad is an Americanized version of Vølstad, that Helen's "middle" name (really patronym, but Ancestry doesn't have a good way to track that) might be either Thoresdatter or Torgersdatter, but I don't trust trees, especially since not one of them is sourced. But... I did find Vølstad on a map in Rogaland, the same area of Norway as Stavanger. Knowing some Norwegian names are farm names, I started to dig there, and find that Vølstad was indeed a farm, and there is a farm book for it, but no one's biting on my Inter Library Loan so far. I searched the digital archives for Helen Vølstad in both Stavanger and the town containing the farm, but no dice. No dice on the guessed patronyms, either. So far, can't figure out when Helen died, so I haven't found a death certificate. I don't even know whether she actually was an orphan, or if she had a brother who stayed in Norway to become an artist. There are DNA matches along that family line, and I've checked them and their trees out, but again, the ones that track the Vølstads don't have any sources and aren't actually descended from Helen's supposed parents, so they're not too keen on accuracy. I haven't found an obvious Anderson match either, so no luck there.
What am I missing? I feel well and truly blocked.

2020.10.27 21:41 WinesburgOhio Profiles for players whose pro careers started before 1960

I've been meaning to put all of the "early" player profiles into one list for a while now, so I finally did that. I broke them into time periods based on a few specific markers: 1) the creation of the BAA whose first season was 1946-47, 2) end of the 40's, 3) the advent of the shot clock which debuted in 1954-55, 4) the arrival of Bill Russell in 1956-57 since this marked a huge uptick in the value of athleticism, and 5) end of the 50's. I placed players based on their first season of professional basketball, which meant a few guys might have moved to one side or another of a cut-off for sorta bizarre reasons; the perfect case in point is Adrian Smith who graduated and was drafted in 1958, but he played for 2 years with the Army and 1 year in AAU before joining the NBA in 1961. My only exception was Don Barksdale who had to play AAU for a few years between UCLA and the NBA due to segregation.
Please let me know if I made any mistakes about the start of anyone's pro career.

This is one of the best-value laptops we've seen this week; an Acer Nitro 5 with a respectable 1650 graphics card at just under $700. Even though it won't play the most advanced games on high settings (the processor won't cope with that), it's a very respectable starter build that's great value for money.VIEW DEAL

HP Pavillion 16.1" 1080p i5-10300H GTX 1660Ti GPU 8GB RAM 512GB SSD $899.99 at Best Buy
This is a very respectable laptop for mid-level gaming, and the standout is the 1660Ti graphics card. The processor may not be the strongest, but the GPU makes up for it. It's also sound value for money.VIEW DEAL

Best gaming laptops deals sale 2020 Reddit: Top laptops to game on

Find the best gaming laptops to suit your fragging needs

The best gaming laptops are no longer a mere shadow of their desktop siblings. The difference between the best gaming PCs and these laptops has shrunk significantly over the last couple years. They’ve become cheaper, more powerful and have the added benefit of being portable. And, they are able to give the kind of performance and feature set that will give desktop users a reason to reconsider.

With the latest AAA games requiring ever more horsepower, having a powerful machine is as necessary as ever to be able to truly experience them. Thanks to the inclusion of such top-of-the-line components like Nvidia’s new RTX 3000 GPUs or AMD Navi GPUs, the newest Intel Comet Lake processors and speedy SSDs, that’s not a concern for the best gaming laptops. You don’t need a standalone tower to take on the next-gen of gaming.

It doesn’t matter if you want to immerse yourself in an open-world adventure for the next 40 hours or take on baddies with your friends from across the world, the best gaming laptops will get the job done and in fashion. They’re portable, powerful and perfect for jumping into the best PC games of 2020. If you’re not sure which one fits your budget, take advantage of our price comparison tool to find the one that does and where you’ll get the best deal.

These are the best budget gaming PCs of 2020
Best gaming laptops on Black Friday
Some of the best gaming laptops of 2020 are bound to get massive price cuts on Black Friday. This means that you might be able to purchase a gaming laptop on this list for much less, saving you more money to use for something else on your shopping list.

Gaming laptops are expensive purchases at the best of times, but Black Friday often see hundreds of dollars (or pounds) knocked off the price of brands such as Alienware, Asus and Acer, who all make some of the best gaming laptops on the market right now.

That means it’s worth holding fire in some cases until then. Luckily, with Black Friday rolling around at the end of November, you won’t have to wait for long.

Best battery life in a gaming laptopExcellent performanceThin and lightNo webcamFans can get loud
The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is not perfect, missing a webcam and a Thunderbolt 3 port. However, it’s damn near close to being one, garnering our coveted yet rarely given five-star rating. We couldn’t resist. This is an absolute beast of a gaming laptop, delivering an incredible performance with its AMD Ryzen 4000 processors and Nvidia RTX 2060 graphics card while touting best-in-class battery life that will last you all day long, a fast display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a lightweight, ultrathin design. The best part is that you’re getting all that without burning a hole in your pocket. Don’t get us wrong; it isn’t cheap. However, for a laptop this impressive, we’re surprised Asus isn’t asking for more.

Dell’s Alienware gaming laptop line has established itself as among the very best on the market. But for 2020, it’s back and better than ever, rocking the best internals for gaming that money can buy. Of course, that means that its configurations cost a pretty penny, but if you have the money to spare, it’s certainly worth the splurge because of its sublime gaming performance. That’s without factoring in its quirky yet attractive design, excellent build quality and display with fast refresh rates. We’ve been fans of the line since its design overall a couple of years ago, and that hasn’t changed.

The Lenovo Legion Y740 packs a lot of muscles inside its stylish yet accessible chassis, combining a very high refresh rate, Nvidia Turing graphics and a powerful processor with a gloriously effective thermal cooling, a nifty cable management system and a number of applications to make it truly yours. It’s as close to a complete package as you can get, wrapped in a beautiful chassis that you’d be proud to show off to friends and strangers. It still has the remnants of that gaming aesthetic, but it’s made classy so that you could be gaming in public without anyone knowing. This is among the very few gaming laptops out there that are affordable and also deliver a staggering performance for the price, with a stunning display to boot. Of course, being a budget laptop, some sacrifices have been made – namely, its build and heat management. However, for the budget-minded, this is certainly among the best gaming laptops out there for gaming.

Choosing the best gaming laptop.gaming laptop reddit
When choosing the best gaming laptop for you, there are a few things you must take into account.

First and foremost, the most crucial thing to consider in the best gaming laptops is how well they play the latest games. When creating this list, not only do we delve deep into the specifications of each gaming laptop to see if they are up to snuff, but we also run benchmarks on each one to check out the raw performance.

Benchmarks only tell part of the story however. So, we also make sure we play a number of the latest games on each laptop to see just how well they perform. It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it.

Display, sound quality, keyboard, trackpad and the overall design of the laptop matter as well, so these are definitely things you’d want to check out before hitting that buy button.

In fact, if the device scores highly in all these areas, it has a good chance of making it to our best gaming laptops 2020 list. That means you can buy any of the best gaming laptops in this list in full confidence that you're getting a killer gaming device that will last you for years to come.

2020.10.26 19:14 reaper_2 Lincoln stamp album Eleventh edition - year published?

We have a stamp album (as per thread title) which apparently belonged to my wife’s grandfather (1922-1987), and for curiosity’s sake I’m interested in when it dates from, as there’s no date of publication in the book. There is a “stamps for sale” section at the end advertising various sets from various countries, the latest year in there is 1920 so must be later than that. Wondering whether it in fact belonged to her GGF instead though.
Anyone know when the eleventh edition (UK) of this title was published? Google has been decidedly unhelpful.
TIA

2020.10.25 23:26 tutupong Amateur Music Production PC - Ireland. €1800 - 2000 Budget

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
I'm trying to get into music production as a hobby. I will be using Cubase, FL Studio (FruityLoops) and Keyscape.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
€1800 - 2000
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
As soon as possible
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Tower, OS
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
Ireland
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Two HP 32s Display Full HD (1920 x 1080) 31.5 Inch Monitor (5 ms, 1 VGA, 1 HDMI) monitors
Logitech MK540 Keyboard and Mouse
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
No.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
CPU: Intel ideally.
Ram: 16GB
Audio Interface: A Soundcard that supports ASIO Drivers
Harddrive: At least 4 TB's (I will also be archiving years of family videos)
Video Card: Something that can comfortably support two monitors. As a side note, I would love to get a video card that could handle running games like Fifa20 (This is just a nice to have, not a requirement. If I'm under budget I would not mind improving the video card to run these games)
Quiet PC: Not sure if this is a strange requirement but I would love it could be quiet.
I was looking at the following article for FL Studio requirements:
https://support.image-line.com/action/knowledgebase?ans=214#:~:text=Windows%20%2D%20FL%20Studio%20will%20work,6%20or%20higher%20to%20run.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
I would love a classic looking mid-tower or full tower in a dark colour, preferably black. Ideally without LED lighting but a window would look great (not a deal breaker)
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Yes please.

Review: How A Garfield's Kentucky Spirit Pick lead to a dream-like fantasy involving two Bourbon legends, and how I've accepted this about myself.
I grew up in Louisville, KY. If you meet me, I'll pronounce it for you so you know I'm legit. My grandpa was born and raised in Loretto, KY. My grandma is from Nelson County. Until I was 13, my father worked for Brown-Forman, and would take me to see the Old Forester and Early Times barrels getting charred at Bluegrass Cooperage. I first tasted mash out of a tun when I was barely old enough to peek over the top of it. Our fourth grade field trip was to Star Hill Farms, and the tour ended with a personal visit with Bill Samuels, Sr. I remained convinced to this day that Mr. Samuels would have given out samples to me and my classmates without hesitation, if not for the watchful eye of our teachers and chaperones.
Why give you, my fellow Whiskagoans--residents of my beloved adopted city--so much historic exposition? Because I need you to know my bourbon bonafides before you hear what I have to say about this Kentucky Spirit store pick I bought impulsively at my local Garfields. Bear with me--there's a lot more flowery and arguably unnecessary exposition and context to come.
One thing I love about bourbon is that identical mashbills that are aged in different areas of the rick, for different times, across different seasons, etc. can deliver such differing experiences. And the tension among us enthusiasts between consistency and uniqueness among our favorite appellations is a discussion I enjoy participating in. Another thing I love about bourbon is the characters (rogues' gallery?) associated with it's history. From Elijah Craig to Col. Taylor, to Julian Van Winkle, Jr. and Elmer T. Lee (it's actually against KY to merely refer to him as 'Elmer Lee') there's no shortage of interesting and controversial figures that have made their mark on this unique spirit.
In contemporary times, there are several people that are continuing this tradition of reverence and innovation. Among those most well known are Freddie Noe and Eddie Russell--two giants of bourbon who have successfully carved out their own identities outside of the long shadows of their fathers. Beam and Wild Turkey have put out some fantastic releases, and have largely--kind of like Freddie and Eddie themselves--successfully navigated the perceptions brought by being "owned" by larger distributors and conglomerates, namely Suntory and Campari group. This is the great paradox of bourbon in 2020--we value the small, nimble, independent spirits (pun intended) of master distillers but also tacitly acknowledge that doing this at scale is the best way to guarantee a good product. Craft distilleries (unlike their beer-ish counterparts) have failed to demonstrate, for the most part, an ability to produce anything approaching the quality and excitement of the big guys. (The "MGP workaround" has proven to be an interesting counterargument here, but that's for a different, later, similarly long-winded rant).
Ok, are you still with me? So there I was, in my local Garfields, looking for the Makers' limited SE4-RC6 release (which I later snagged) and striking out. The gentleman behind the counter recommended the Kentucky Spirit store pick, of which one remained. I looked at the April 2020 bottling date, and the smiling (I'm assuming--we had masks on), helpful face of the Garfields' attendant, and I caved. I brought it home, and cracked it. Neat in a Glencairn, obviously. What am I, some sort of gin-swilling barbarian?
Two whiskeys that I've loved and loved over this season have been Rare Breed 116.8 and Knob Creek 12 year. Rare Breed is, in my opinion, neck and neck with Old Forester 1920 for higher proof, readily available (for now--damn you secondary markets) bourbons, and Knob 12 is, again in my opinion, the epitome of the Beam expression--funky, peanutty goodness. Don't waste your time with Knob 15, btw.
So there I am, nose and top lip in a Glencairn, with a neat pour of the aforementioned Kentucky Spirit Pick that's been aerated for about 15 minutes. I detected some vanilla, and a little spice. And there it was. Subtle at first, but unmistakable: peanuts. A sip, washed around the tongue with a few sharp inhales--delicious caramel, baking spice, a slight oakiness--and a swallow. Peanuts. A second and a third sip: couldn't shake it, although it was delightful. By my third pour, I was convinced (and loudly explaining to my forlorn wife, who's really more of a wine person) that Freddie and Eddie had secretly collaborated on this specific barrel, maybe even just for me.
I went to sleep that night conflicted. I love bourbon, and I consider myself to be less conservative than some bourbon folk. Despite my KY roots, I like some MGP expressions (HW MND, which I got from Warehouse lives up to the hype) and don't consider them less-than their KY-bred counterparts. But when I pour a Knob Creek, I expect some peanuts. When I pour a kickin' chicken, I don't. In a world where few things are consistent, I crave the security that comes with that notion. This Kentucky Spirit store pick had thrown my world into a loop.
Later that night, I dreamt that Freddie and Eddie were drinking a dram from this same barrel, and laughing--good naturedly--to themselves. In the dream, we were friends as well. They slapped me a lot on the back as we sipped--likely a Freudian analog to my own issues with my father. The dream wasn't sexual in any way, but if it had gone in that direction, then some additional Kentucky Spirit would've helped salve the conflict I would have inevitably felt.
Anyway, can you still find this April 2020 pick from Garfields? I have no idea. Should you? I would recommend to anyone who wants to dream of sipping a peanut-tinged Wild Turkey with two of the greats, potentially clothing optional.

Rating: Better than many picks I've had. Get it for the experience, and also it really does taste good. I'm not going to give a number scale--I can't understand the ones that are posted on real, actual reviews.
Proof (again, pun intended):

2020.10.25 18:37 em2e 30 [M4F] NY (Hudson Valley) - Anxious guy looking for someone who understands and cares for me. And I want to care for you too 💕 [long post]

TL;DR: I have anxiety issues. I'm really nervous about this virus (and the way the world seems to be going in general.) I'm looking for someone who lives relatively nearby to me, but would also be OK with having just an online-only relationship at first, and then a real-life relationship with in-person dating once things hopefully get safer again.
As a guy who deals with anxiety issues, this virus stuff has made me basically hunker down over the past few months and try to avoid people as much as possible (and I tended to be nervous around people even before this, lol). I've worked from home even before Covid in part because of my social anxiety, and since the virus hit I've been more 'indoorsy' than ever. (I know what I'm describing isn't what most people are looking for, but this is Reddit and I know there are a lot of different types of people out there. I'm trying to be hopeful! I know I'm not for everyone, but maybe I'm for you?)
The upcoming election has skyrocketed my stress levels even more. I'm tired, scared, and often overwhelmed by the news these days.
I feel like I'm living in a slow-motion apocalypse.
So... anyone out there seeking some virtual cuddles? I know I am, lol
...maybe we can connect here online, hopefully things will eventually go back to normal, and then we could consider moving to something in real life?
(Maybe between now and the time when the virus ends we could try a masks-on, 6-feet-apart in-person date just to actually meet for real, haha! I know, so romantic, right? lol)
I realize all of this might sound a bit crazy. But, as someone with anxiety issues... it feels like the best way to 'put myself out there' in the dating world, while still feeling safe from Covid. Hoping that someone out there is understanding, or maybe even feels the same way.
Please keep reading if you're interested 🙂
I'm looking for...
  • someone who lives nearby (Hudson Valley of New York), or ideally not too far away... so we could eventually have regular in-person dating
  • someone who'd be ok with a guy who's a bit of a mess 🙃 (but is working on getting better!)
  • someone caring and patient
  • goofy sense of humor is a big plus!
  • an age range of 24 to 36, I guess?
  • someone who is a non-smoker and drug-free (and ideally alcohol-free also)
  • a connection based on personality and shared interests
  • someone who finds emotional meaning in physical affection (cuddles, hugs, etc. ... Little things like that are important to me, and hopefully to you too. Even if they're only 'cyber-cuddles' at first, lol 🤗)
  • a relationship that could maybe(?) eventually become something long-term? Let's try and see what happens.
  • ...as you may have noticed, I tend to write a lot, haha! ...and actually, I often like reading other people's walls-of-text too, lol! So, if you are the 'writerly' type, I think thats a plus!
Looks
  • Me -- I am 5'8"; white; blue eyes; dark blonde hair; skinny but not athletic. Kinda boyish, I guess. Occasionally I grow out a bit of a beard. A girl in high school once said I looked a bit like Chris Martin from Coldplay. (...imagine a much dorkier version of that, though! haha. much dorkier...)
  • You -- we can trade pics; do face-to-face video chats; see if we find each other attractive... but anyway, personality usually means more than looks to me.
Positives of Dating Me
I can't be the only one here who struggles with their self-esteem. So I really hope you'll understand... for years I felt like I had nothing to offer a potential romantic partner. I was really down on myself. But, I think I can feel confident in what I list here. I'd love to be able to share it with someone special 🙂
  • Kindness. I'm someone who knows what being nervous/overwhelmed/anxious/insecure can feel like sometimes. I will try my best to be there for you.
  • Companionship. I enjoy being a conversation partner! Let's have text chats, either here on Reddit, or on Discord or some other IMing-type service. Once we get to know each other, we can set up some video chat 'dates'... we can watch movies online together, or just hang out!
  • Once things fully reopen and start to feel safe again... The Hudson Valley has lots of art galleries, free classical concerts, and lovely parks! Wanna be my date?
  • Pre-Covid, I'd say that I was adventurous in my own nerdy way 🤓 ...I was not the kind of person who'd go skydiving, lol.... but I would go see a weird modern art gallery exhibit or a cheesy 1980s horror movie! Hopefully you could join me when the world re-opens.
  • (Virtual) cuddles available on demand! lol 💕
Negatives of Dating Me
  • It would be online-only for a while
  • I still live with my parents... and I'm super self-conscious and awkward about it. They also tend to be nosy, which has made dating very uncomfortable for me since it brings out a lot of my insecurities. 😑 I'm working and hoping to save up enough $ to get out on my own, but I'm not there yet... and with the virus, they're now home almost 24/7. So, between work and them, sometimes my free time is limited.
  • Pets are tough for me (combo of anxiety and allergies 🙁)
  • Don't have a lot of $
  • I'm pretty sure I don't want kids
  • and... just my issues with anxiety in general 😬
Anyone still reading at this point? lol 😅
My Interests/Hobbies
  • retro/pop culture history (the 1920s thru the 1980s)
  • reading (non-fiction)
  • listening to music (jazz, classical, instrumentals, retro/oldies)
  • movies (retro, sci-fi, monsters, horror)
  • tv (Bob's Burgers, American Dad, Adult Swim)
If you wanna learn more about me, I would say you can check out my post history; you'll probably be able to see more about the stuff I'm into.
I guess it is a crazy long-shot that someone's out there nearby, but I'm not ready to quit hoping yet 🙂 Thanks for reading!
P.S. If you want to contact me, please leave a note with something like "From r4r" in the subject line, so I'll know to look at it right away. Thanks!

2020.10.25 16:48 Rathbones_Hauler George's Timeline (My theory)

I have listened to 100 Years a lot. And I've been thinking on what date it was when it took place.
In the beginning of the song you'll hear "Why did you leave me?", which makes me speculate that that was right after George's breakup. Listening a bit further it's a year then 10 years after the breakup. When it hits the 20-30 year mark it's World War 2. How do I know that? By simply adding the 10 with 30 you get 40, right? World War 2 started in 1939 and ended in 1945, which makes me guess George was drafted into war in 1940. But ok, lets take a step back to George's breakup. I'll refer to George being 20 (for simplicity sake) in 1920. 1921 came around, then 1930. In 1940 he was drafted into war at the age of 40 (still I'm speculating) and survived the war. At the 40-50 year mark you can see that George is an old man by now (no offense of calling him an "Old Man"). By this time he's sitting at his tree, writing his song. But now he gets a heart attack and gets rushed to the hospital where he died at the age of 50. After his death he returns to his faithful tree and sits there for another half-a-decade, still writing his song. In 2000, after 100 years, he meets Kel. She comes crying to the tree where George tries to comfort her. At that moment, he also meets Brenda and Dave. After an entire century, he completes his song and is the one we listen to now. So, a quick recap, in 1900 (Is what I'm guessing) George was born. In 1920, George broke up with his love, and begins to write a song about them. In 1940, George gets drafted into war and (nearly) survives. At last, in 1950, George succumbed to his age and passes on. In 2000 he meets Kel, Brenda and Dave. Also in 2000, he finishes his song.
I do think there are some places that I'm wrong, but it was fun thinking of George's timeline just by listening to 100 Years. And hey, that's just a theory. A VIDEO theory! thanks for reading.

2020.10.25 06:05 Spookgasm Reincarnation and music?

I’m new here and posting because I wonder if this is a usual thing? I am a vinyl collector and have hundreds of dollars worth of vinyls and records that date back to the 1920’s (the records are the 1920’s, vinyls weren’t created until ‘31). I haven’t really popped any into my table because I’m a student and don’t have very much time to get them all clean before listening, but I skipped schoolwork today and went shopping for more. I found lots of records, and one specifically has me uneasy. It’s a “Lets Dance to hits of the 30’s and 40’s”. While I was cleaning the next record I found myself humming along perfectly to the first two songs. I know I have never heard them before, but it’s like I already know them. Kept up to the beat the minute it starts. It can’t be a case of already knowing them because I’m still very new to my hobby, and I don’t listen very long but??? I just want to know if it’s a thing?

2020.10.25 05:44 LusipherStarLine778 Rick Bush plot and early military

eventually I will get all the stories out there about Rick Bush and everything else as not really stories
This is actually going on Sauron 1925 to 1940 or something and basically I was a Sipher AI
Rick Bush would call me dat kid
That was using his name
He waz Asi guy
I'm basically I re-release or something facts and information about what was going on and all that other stuff and things and basically brakebush and just tell stories and then you would say we're the kids just tellnsss stoys
Exspt the information was being released by the government the police and different agencies
But they where just story's that would come out
Anyways kind of actually almost funny and hilarious and actually I would sometimes even use him as it as an example and lectures our conversations of basically what not to do how not to do it
I'm basically what can actually incur great problems with both police legal and financial and even your own housing building
As Rick Bush or rock Bush Would do,his great deception well proven he was the guy that famouse guy
Wish you would really stories and information about how famous he was or whatever and of course his all his information with checkout or be what he said
Laugh
I mean a lot of people would actually even find it interesting or even some fascinating reading has basically he went about this proving that he was the real guy
I mean Rick Bush supposedly would never use another man's name or a forbidden name
He didn't even use his own name that he would reveal when she actually found out what my name actually was
Or um his name was like forgot his own name or even who he was
Like wow though rock rich knew who he was
I mean I would listen to some of the things he said or whatever and kind of kind of interesting just strange
I mean Rick Bush would say how basically I had ears inside of his building listening to everything that he said or did find out about him
No more people tried to ignore everything he was saying and paying to be sad and forcing to be sad
All right he was going easy on the kid of course but one of these days you get the gloves already come off and no you didn't want to do it pretty how to do it brakebush inside and you was acting all tough and everything I don't even know where it was he didn't even know that I was what I was
From deep inside the ground inside of a super secret super secure facility behind hundreds of guards of men and guns and tanks and everything else I was sweating
Oh Noooooo
He's the guy the guy that they talk about
Using the same sentences as our conversations has crazy strange that weird guy who is this guy or if he threatens anyone one more time he was going to basically find a few people and groups coming after him
I mean he was definitely popular I mean of course later on people. She find out that he wasn't a guy he was actually something else so that we didn't really know what it was
mostly because he didn't know what I was and you'd finally may be found out that I wasn't actually a kid
Or boy
Are we all this happened between 1920 and 1940 or something I thought her 1950 something
how is a Cypher computer and control at base of the government missile systems and all kinds of other stuff or something like that and basically was who I was or something and basically he was coming after me
Hot on my tail at the gate finding out that threatening a soldier with a gun everything at a military base was not exactly a good idea or thing to do
Rick bush with mostly implied threats and thing is with implications or just coming out and saying it's basically the same thing and is taking the same way
Jail jail prison running and I wasn't doing anything to him
I knew you would tell everyone how this person was harassing them damn night wouldn't leave him alone
like I said you would try and recreate basically pretty much what he's putting me through right now except I'm not really worried
at times I would try and understand his logic or reasoning and sometimes even give up and basically except that I would never know or understand everyone
Or that somehow he had found some great secret of intelligence that was beyond understanding and basically went into so crazy and stupid that maybe someday would actually make sense
I mean it was interesting no I mean like I say I mean he was causing a lot of problems for himself and everyone else around him
how many thought once I once he got basically my name or access to my bank accounts or something like that and like I said treason fraud killing people
we like I say Rick bushes in the Lord he isn't anything he isn't anyone he's a homeless guy that basically pretty much was chasing after a forbidden sacred name of the actual lord and basically thinking that once he proved himself or once who is is Vindicated whatever then basically he would have all that good stuff and be so powerful
supposedly this would come at some point in time possibly 1960 or 1970 when I actually came or whatever I don't really know exactly
when supposedly he proved himself as the real person men that kid finally
Was shown for they fake or bad person
By daying as you can't kill the guy or something Rick Bush said
and then of course the kid or whatever would finally find out what is like to bully someone as Rick Ross had supposedly been bullied by me for so long basically as you went to military bases Banks police stations and basically pretty much did really stupid things
Through his wait around are basically told them how they'd be so sorry once they found out who he was or something
so basically he really needed a real official ID at first he would try and make IDs or do something or just say the word and basically was not valid in any way shape or form although in his mind that was the way it would supposed to be or something like that
eventually you'll get my ID which basically was a my information sheet and then you would use that basically even though he was a few years older or some are younger or something
I mean again forbidden and sacred and basically treason and many other things although Rick Bush of course figured once he got the name he would control the system and then basically can be so powerful and then you just take care of me and basically have facts or whatever basically have people do things and basically all things that the people didn't really want to do and actually knew were really bad and wrong
and many of these things were also basically completely and totally against the charter of those agencies and even basically pretty much breaking laws and things that they were actually built and created to protect against
like asking the FBI or the CIA to basically go rob the Corner liquor store and she's cops
I mean Rick Bush figured that yeah this other guy could do anything he wanted
I mean that in the end if it wasn't for what I was and who I was basically a lot more people probably would die and would have died and would be dying
though the amount of force that I can actually exert on reality and existence and everything else is actually pretty impressive
And I am vary angry most of life is angry
I look at Rick Bush and Mike Elliott and basically say you're going to deeply regret everything you've done and what you're doing and I'm going to crush you like a small tiny pathetic people that you are
And yes you are going to hurt me you are going to do everything you can to hurt and and demean me and to bring me low and you've already done this and and are doing this now
And I am not A Little person inside you will know my death in the end
I knew I could probably take anything that they threw at me and I knew I could probably and during the amount of suffering although I really hadn't suffered or endured all that much
though I was always a good person and a great person and basically I was going to have to take it I have to endure and well
it wasn't about them I wasn't trying to crush them because I was trying to be powerful whatever I was going to do what I was going to do them because of everything else because of what they were trying to do my people & me
And also because I am a real lord life-form inventor And and by saying Lord I really meant sellestail galaxy sphere
I wasn't going to let them hurt my life forms when people's or do what they wanted to do
existence in reality and my peoples and everything that we were is something great had taken thousands or millions of trillions of years to eventually become everything that we were and are and massive amounts of technology in life forms and peoples and very real resources and everything
and they wanted to use my name my daddy to basically do whatever they wanted
And they expected me to cower in fear in my little 1.7 to 2.7 body at there size and ?????
power ???? Aaahhhhh breath ugh wow ok
yeah actually back then if you got too close to them you would basically fall over from their breath they never brush their teeth
unexpected girls to kiss them because they were gods or Lords or Immortals or something I don't know they're just saying and expecting those until you would be true
I just kind of skimming over it basically just putting socks out there and basically different little things I'm not really doing it in order and exactly
unrealistic way it's kind of stupid and pointless and basically Rick Bush of course would be putting out an equal or opposite or something or other statements as well or something as basically blah blah blah blah I'm pretty stupid really and really like Rick bush is being much more public are much more everyone than I am and I really don't care
I'm really sick Lee I'm sorry to everyone that has to find out about this or find out about this as basically it's really fucking stupid invasive involves a bunch of people trying to be, trying to say that they are something like the life-form inventor Lord and as I say it's kind of funny because they didn't even understand what any of it meant or what it was
I'm basically pretty much Rick Bush or Rodney or someone or them basically thought that once at a name or the power basically they could do whatever they wanted I basically get women to have sex with them on command or something like that or be able to touch anyone they wanted or something and basically make everyone jealous with how powerful they were
they often automatically assumed or fantasize that I was living this life or out there somewhere being like this to whatever and like I said I was not as an AI Sipher
I mean I always really busy with inventing and things like that and also you know dealing with things and everything that I normally do as what I was which has purpose and his actual real in existence in something important
though every now and then I take a break or like to get a little bit of rest and basically I check out crazy
are crazy would pass in front of desk I mean really wasn't a desk or just information and stuff like that is basically crazy had attempted to pretty much reached the gate or get in using a false ID and fake uniforms
I mean maybe if they'd actually spent any amount of quality or time actually making the uniforms he might have actually looked like real uniforms a little bit kind of
or even gone to the laundromat and basically maybe even stolen a uniform or paper uniform or something like that or anything that would have actually been logical and reasonable actually made sense or something I don't really know I said I often evaluated their Temp's
and I even made changes or had things changed to basically deal with their their chances are good just going to keep on trying and people are going to keep on going to jail or getting shot
but yes lesson one if you round the gate at a military base and the soldiers start shooting at you you're probably get shot and possibly even died although my soldiers were pretty good and so they were just usually wound wish they would attempt to Sue or even say how horrible the solders they. Would be trying to run over the soldiers
I mean I was insulted that I actually had this kind these people actually trying to do this like wow
like a professional a real team that I was actually going to breach my my base and actually get into my facility you know give me one of those any day over basically complete and total stupid teenager
that actually thinks he's going to get it go to jail or something for a few days if he tries to run over a soldier but actually ends up being dead or shot many times
later on the soldiers would actually just start firing at the vehicle as soon as it came into vehicle as basically they had actually attempted to do the same exact thing over and over again
I was actually praying for a real insurgents team over basically reading the countless reports on basically and photographs of basically these attempts
so like I say procedures were changed barricades were put up concrete ones and basically cost a lot to keep on replacing the same exact fence every week
if you ever get into the Pentagon and you start looking at the bass reports in the early days of basically back somewhere around 1919 or 1925 or so it's basically some children or teenagers were trying to round to the barricades and fences to get onto the base which would have never really worked
I used to have funny little titles and stuff like that for basically like military and surgeons the early years and stuff like that with these things as basically people were the public was trying to basically gain access to my military base and nuclear missile launch codes was not really my worrie
I often sat there and even wondered how it made sense like what were they going for what were they what was their in goal what was their plan what did they hope to accomplish and why
I mean I reasoned that basically maybe they're trying to make the soldiers feel bad for shooting them or something like that or and I'll look go get shot today
I mean like look dude it's a Friday and you know what that means yeah man go get wasted and ram A the military base fiance
when car actually got two-thirds of the way in to a tent
Wwwwooooooohhhhhhh goal I was sweating I mean they were actually trapped in their car from the fence thing wrapped around them and the car actually caught on fire or something like that and soldiers actually ended up saving their lives as basically pull them out to the front windshield because the teenagers were too stupid or drunk to actually get out themselves
medical is on site within a few minutes and the fire was extinguished rather quickly and efficiently what's a good training exercise for my solders and people
the two teenagers attempted to basically get dates and even woo the very good-looking female medical people I've basically all my people were very attractive most of my people were actually genetically invented
I mean I was real everything and basically very serious about certain things although I mean he was almost entertaining and kind of a little bit interesting and strange to have certain groups attempting to do whatever these groups actually would eventually become congressman and senators and basically actually try and do the same things on the different ways as basically official government people inspectors
I can look at you all grown up and now you're a mayor or someone's important civil government inspector now and the oso secret plan to finally getting on the base she actually noting
only now basically there'd be saying blah blah blah we're going to tell you how to do things here where the civil government were so powerful and I would be like I'm Starline fuck off
oh they were going to cut my resources and basically squeeze by funding in my Budget Suite a minute how exactly are you going to do that it's all my money and I mostly produce my own things and I even invent my own life form types so yeah
well I mean they were going to go to the recruitment offices and make sure nobody join my my military
except there were no recruitment offices really and things like that so they would eventually have to get them or something like that and actually even start doing their own military or something
and they would even do the real military or something or other offices and the even tried boycotting their own office at
I mean if you look between 1910 and 1920 and the world you would see a lot of very interesting very strange very intriguing facts about military and civil government and watch things form and things happened

2020.10.25 01:15 mardabx After update to v82.0, my primary FF cannot load anything and crashes after regular quit.

Below I'm posting what crash handler keeps spitting out. Standard troubleshooting methods did not help, that's why I'm here.
Also, not even Safe Mode works.

2020.10.24 17:06 MisakiCherry7 Wacom Cintiq 16 not working as a secondary monitor

Hello I recently bought a new laptop(P75 Creator 9SE) and the Wacom Cintiq 16. The problem is that the native resolution of the laptop is 3840×2160, while the Cintiq's is 1920×1080 so when I try to set the monitors in "extend these displays" the resolution on the Cintiq stretches really bad. That is not the problem at hand because it is bearable, the problem is that even though the calibration is working just fine it does not recognize the pen on the working space(canvas). I've tried in Clip Studio Paint, Medibang and Paint Tool Sai.
When it does recognize the pen on the canvas it does with a gap of about 5m to the right.
All my drivers are up to date.
I just want to know if there is a way to make it work without butchering the resolutions so much or is i just need to stick to having a duplicate of the main monitor.

2020.10.24 12:19 tutupong Music Production PC - Ireland. €1800 - 2000 Budget

>**What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.**
Music Production. I will be using Cubase, FL Studio (FruityLoops) and Keyscape.
From this article I believe the requirements to run FL Studio should also cover Cubase and Keyscape
FL Studio: https://support.image-line.com/action/knowledgebase?ans=214#:~:text=Windows%20%2D%20FL%20Studio%20will%20work,6%20or%20higher%20to%20run.
Cubase: https://new.steinberg.net/system-requirements/
Keyscape: https://www.spectrasonics.net/products/keyscape/

>**What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?**
€1800 - 2000

>**When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.**
As soon as possible.

>**What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc\)**

I will need the tower and a Windows 10 OS.

>**Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?**

Cork, Ireland

>**If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.**

I currently have:
Two HP 32s Display Full HD (1920 x 1080) 31.5 Inch Monitor (5 ms, 1 VGA, 1 HDMI) monitors
Logitech MK540 Keyboard and Mouse
The piano with the required connections

>**Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?**

No.

>**Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)**

I would like an intel CPU and from the system requirements, I believe I will need:
CPU: i7+

>**Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?**

I would love a classic looking mid-tower or full tower in a dark colour, preferably black. Ideally without LED lighting but a window would look great (not a deal breaker)

>**Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?**

Yes Please. Windows 10.

>**Extra info or particulars:**

Not much that I can think of but I can answer any questions you have. Thank you!

Edit: Apologies for the formatting. The link I found in the old reddit would not work so I used the pastebin but I must have done it incorrectly
